Last week, I entered the Activity Center to find our residents whooping and hollering as they were enjoying a bowling tournament played with a plastic ball and pins and foam swimming pool noodles for lanes.
Then yesterday, I heard uncontrollable laughter and found them engaged in a volleyball game. Both of these games were being played from their wheelchairs and walkers.
In 1992, our Board of Directors had the wonderful foresight to build an Activity Center with foldable walls that also serve as a chapel for weekly worship and an occasional funeral service. This project also included a hair salon, main lobby entrance, conference room, and offices for the health care team.
This 10,000 square foot addition totally changed the face of our skilled nursing facility. More importantly, it changed the atmosphere because it provided a great place for our residents to gather, converse and just hang out and have lots of fun.
It’s hard to believe that was 32 years ago. Over the years, this has been a special place where we have enjoyed great parties, annual enchilada dinners, weekly Fiddlers group, and the residents’ favorite - BINGO! But the truth is, after 32 years this Activity Center is in terrible need of upgrading, refurbishing and refurnishing.
The wallcoverings are deteriorating, the flooring is cracked, and the carpet is threadbare; cabinets are scarred; the furniture has lost its finish and the upholstery is splitting.
Our Board members remain committed to making sure Lakeview continues to provide the very best for our residents. They know it’s time to tackle this large project. That’s why they have decided to move forward in securing the funds to make this happen. The estimated cost of this project is approximately $500,000.00.
Friends, that is a LOT of money and certainly not in our budget. That’s why I am reaching out to you and asking if you are willing to help us put the “shine” back on this very important area where our residents spend so much of their time laughing, singing and praying.
